Club Events and Activities

Tot Trot
Tot Trot, an annual fundraising event for a children’s charity, is a day of games and activities for families, concluding in a series of races for children aged two to seven. Prior to the races, children have the opportunity to play carnival games, visit a petting zoo, climb aboard a Summit fire truck, visit the face painting table, and much more. This popular event is held in early June at Memorial Field in Summit.

Travel Auction
This biannual fundraising event benefits a charitable organization such as the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. The Travel Auction has two parts: a silent auction and a live auction. In the silent auction, attendees make written bids on items that have been donated by local merchants, such as jewelry, toys, restaurant gift certificates, and clothing. In the live auction, an auctioneer takes bids on larger donated items, such as trips to ski resorts or spa vacations.

Shopping Night
Shopping Night is an annual fundraiser where vendors sell women’s and children’s clothing and accessories, as well as gift items such as stationery and tableware. SJFC receives a percentage of all sales during the evening; those proceeds are donated to a selected charity.

Adopt-a-Class
Adopt-a-Class is a community service program in which club members make monthly visits to the second grade class at the Fifteenth Avenue School in Newark.  During each visit, SJFC members do a craft project with students, read books (which are then donated to the classroom library) and serve snacks and juice.  Each month’s program has a different theme, usually tied to a holiday celebration (decorating pumpkins in October).  Club members also donate Thanksgiving food baskets to families in need at the school.

State Project
The State Project is a biannual fundraiser to support a charity selected by SJFC’s parent organization, the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs.  Club members choose the type of event, such as a fashion show and luncheon with club members as models.

SHIP
SJFC supports SHIP (Summit Helping Its People), an organization that helps local families in need, by devoting several evenings to cooking dinners at Calvary Episcopal Church in Summit.  The food is then delivered by SHIP volunteers to area churches for distribution to the homeless.

Progressive Dinner
This annual social event is a great way to get to know other club members and their spouses.  In the course of the evening, attendees visit one house for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, travel to a second house for dinner, and move to a third house for coffee and dessert.

Book Club
Each month a book is selected for discussion at the book club meeting, which is held at a club member’s home.  The books are often recent bestsellers, both fiction and nonfiction, but can include older works and classic novels.  When possible, authors will read from their books and speak about their work.

Santa Claus Shop
The Santa Claus Shop is an annual event staffed by volunteers from several local organizations including SJFC.  The purpose of the Santa Claus Shop is to give local families and seniors the opportunity to give their loved ones Christmas gifts that they otherwise could not afford.  With the help of volunteers, each person selects gifts for family members at no charge, and the gifts are then wrapped in holiday paper.  This event is usually held at a local church.

Fourth and Fifth Grade Spelling Bee
The Fourth and Fifth Grade Spelling Bee is held in January at Lawton C. Johnson Summit Middle School.  The Spelling Bee is offered as a community service to the fourth and fifth grade students in Summit’s five public elementary schools (Brayton, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln-Hubbard and Washington) and two private elementary schools (Kent Place and Oak Knoll).  About 85 students participate in this popular community event.
